About Kathy Joy La Plante
Finding My Voice Later in Life
I didn't grow up imagining I'd become a novelist. For most of my life, I carried my truth quietly, navigating the world with resilience, curiosity, and a deep inner knowing that my story wasn't finished yet. It wasn't until my seventies that I finally gave myself permission to step into my voice — not cautiously, but fully.
What began as a personal exploration became a creative awakening. Writing opened a door I didn't know I'd been waiting to walk through.
Where Fiction and Lived Experience Meet
My debut novel, The Summons: A Call to Love, reflects the way I see the world: layered, emotional, and shaped by the interplay between personal truth and historical forces.
I write historical fiction woven with memoir-like character perspectives — stories where identity, secrecy, courage, and love collide across shifting cultural landscapes. My lived experience informs the emotional core of my work, but the stories themselves belong to the characters who inhabit them.
I'm drawn to the echoes between past and present, and to the ways history continues to shape the lives of LGBTQ+ people today. Through fiction, I explore the questions that have shaped my own journey: What does it cost to hide? What does it take to be seen? And what becomes possible when we finally choose ourselves?
Writing as Transformation
I came to writing late in life, but not by accident. It took decades of living, unlearning, and listening to myself before I realized that silence had become its own burden. Writing became a way to reclaim my story — not just for the world, but for the younger version of me who never had the chance to speak freely.
My work is rooted in emotional honesty and hard-won clarity. I write for anyone who has ever felt silenced, unseen, or unsure of where they belong.
A Life of Seeking
Outside of writing, I'm a lifelong seeker. I find inspiration in astrology, creativity, and the healing arts — practices that have helped me make sense of my own path and continue to guide me forward.
I believe deeply in the power of storytelling to illuminate truth, spark connection, and remind us that reinvention is always possible. My journey is proof that it's never too late to claim your voice or begin again.
If You're Here
If you've found your way to my work, I'm grateful. My hope is that my stories offer you something meaningful — a moment of recognition, a spark of courage, or simply the reminder that you're not alone in your becoming.
This is more than a novel; it’s a call to love in all its forms, messy, redemptive, and brave. An unforgettable debut. I didn’t want it to end.
